MARTINS MARCHES IN BELMONT DAY PARADE IN ELMONT

State Senator Jack M. Martins marched in the Belmont Day Parade in Elmont this past week. The annual parade marches down Hempstead Turnpike and celebrates the Belmont Stakes Parade. Marching with Senator Martins were Supervisor Kate Murray, Principal John Capozzi of Elmont Memorial High School, Supt. Ralph Ferrie and residents of the Elmont community.

SENATOR MARTINS NAMED HONORARY MEMBER OF MINEOLA GOLDEN AGE CLUB

During the 45th anniversary celebration of the Mineola Golden Age Club, held at Chateau Briand in Carle Place, Senator Jack M. Martins was honored to have been made an honorary member of the club by club president Lillian Barnola. Senator Martins attended many of the club's meeting when he served as Mayor of the Village of Mineola. Now, as Senator, he is an honorary member, which is no small recognition, considering the Mineola Golden Age Club is comprised of the esteemed seniors of the community who helped build the village into the wonderful community it is today. The club has a rich tradition and stays active through its meetings, activities, classes and trips. Senator Martins thanks club president Barnola and all the members for this prestigious honor.

SENATE PASSES MARTINS BILL TO GET UNLICENSED DRIVERS OFF OUR ROADS

MARTINS BILL RESOLVING CONFLICT OF LOCAL BUDGET HEARINGS WITH ROSH HASHANA PASSES SENATE

Proceedings Fall on Same Day As High Holy Day This Year

Senator Jack M. Martins (R-C-I, Mineola) today announced that legislation (S.5609) he sponsors to resolve the conflict of Rosh Hashana falling on the same day that local special district commissioners are required to hold their public budget hearings this year has passed the Senate.

By law, a special district’s annual public budget hearing must be held the first Thursday after the first Tuesday in September each year. It just so happens that this year, that date is September 5th, the same day as Rosh Hashana. The legislation sponsored by Senator Martins will allow these hearings to be held one week later on September 12th.

Slow and Steady

In Aesop’s fable, the Tortoise and the Hare we learn, “slow and steady wins the race.” Truthfully, many of us probably learned this first from an overconfident Bugs Bunny who challenged Cecil Turtle to a footrace. Who can forget his look-alike cousins who help the slow-talking tortoise outwit Bugs to win the race?

There’s something to be said about enlisting the help of others to steadily accomplish goals and this is true of my effort to protect Long Island’s drinking water. That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to create the Long Island Aquifer Commission.

New York State Senator Jack M. Martins recently attended the Mineola Golden Age Club's 45th anniversary celebration and Chateau Briand in Carl Place. The Mineola Golden Age Club is truly an amazing organization that displays the talents of the Mineola's senior community. The club participates in numerous activies as the members have shared a comraderie and special bond they bring with them from the Mineola Community Center, where they regularly meet, to the casinos of Atlantic City, where the club sometimes travels to for trips.

SENATOR MARTINS ATTENDS BASKETBALL AWARDS CEREMONY AT HENRY VISCARDI SCHOOL

New York State Senator Jack M. Martins recently attended the awards ceremony for the Henry Viscardi School Basketball Team. Senator Martins was extremely proud to be given the opportunity to recognize the oustanding accomplishments of the members of the team as well as their coach, Joe Slaninka.

Three years ago, Senator Martins invited the team to participate in his annual 3-on-3 tournament that takes place at the Dutch Braodway School in Elmont. This year will be no exception. The Viscardi team will be ready to go on July 13 when the 10th annual tournament takes place. It has become a midsummer tradition and Senator Martins is honored that the students, staff and parents of the Henry Viscardi School family participate.

Leader Stewart-Cousins Announces Bill Requiring State to Pay for Unfunded Mandates Passes Senate

Albany, NY - A bill that requires the State to fund any mandated program imposed on local governments and school districts passed the Senate Monday with strong support from Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. The bill would protect local municipalities from bearing the cost of programs created and/ or originated by the State and allow local officials to set their own priorities without the possibility of future unfunded mandated programs disrupting their budgets.

SENATOR MARTINS ATTENDS RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY FOR NEW HOFSTRA MEDICAL SCHOOL

New York State Senator Jack M. Martins, the newest member of the Senate Standing Committee on Heath. attended the ribbon cutting ceremomy for the new Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. 

The ribbon cutting ceremony signified that ground was broken on a new, 65,000-square-foot expansion that will more than double the size of the school just two years after enrolling its first students. The new facility comes at a critical time since future doctors are needed to accomodate the fact that more people will be insured in the new to come.

Cut Red Tape, Create Jobs

ALBANY, 06/10/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced senate approval of legislation he sponsored to allow the legislature to eliminate or amend state regulations that overstep their original intent.  The bill (S.3462) was part of a bi-partisan senate package aimed at ridding New York State of unnecessary government regulations that inhibit job creation and drive up local property taxes.

SENATE ADVANCES MARTINS BILL TO REQUIRE ARBITRATION IN MUNICIPAL WATER RATE DISPUTES

The Senate Local Government Committee moved legislation (S.5018) out of committee that is sponsored by Senator Jack Martins (R-C-I, Mineola) which will require municipalities to use arbitration when disputes over water rates occur between those municipalities.

The bill states that arbitration must be included in the contracts between two or more municipalities that share a common water supply when they cannot come to an agreement on the water rates one municipality is charging the other.

Helping First Responders Afford Needed Equipment

ALBANY, 06/05/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today announced final legislative approval of a bill he sponsored to increase the amounts of allowable loans under the emergency services loan fund.   Senator Seward’s  bill (S.3728B) will adjust the loan rates available to account for inflation and help departments with equipment purchases and other necessary upgrades.

The Wee Small Hours of the Morning

This past week, my office received a phone call at 1:23 a.m. from an organizer at MoveOn.org who threatened to oust me from office unless I embrace a bill calling for taxpayer funding of political campaigns. The call came as no surprise as people who call empty offices in the dead of night have no real intention of entering into meaningful discussion.

So I’ll share my position here. To be clear, I consider taxpayer financed political campaigns to be one of the most blatant exploitations of hard-working New Yorkers I have come across. Proponents claim it cleans up elections by taking money out of the game. It doesn’t. It merely substitutes your tax dollars for private donations.

Senator O'Brien supports reservists, National Guard members

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senator Ted O’Brien today announced that the State Senate passed an amendment to the real property tax law that would allow local governments to grant a 5 percent tax reduction to long-term veterans of the National Guard or any of the reserve branches of the United States Military. Senator O'Brien voted yes on the measure.
