Trees for the Troops From Grossmans

On Friday, December 2nd, I had the privilege to kick off Trees for Troops weekend at Grossmans Garden and Home. Grossmans Garden & Home is partnering for a second year with the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx to participate in the nationwide Trees for Troops Program. GGH is the only retail in Monroe Country to have a FedEx Trailer on site for the the weekend. After purchasing a tree, families may also load the newly donated tree directly on the truck (with the help of a Grossmans team member) to be given to a local military family. Imagine seeing the kids 'light up' and enjoy the opportunity to put that fresh tree on that huge truck!

Senator John A. DeFrancisco (R-I-C, Syracuse), an Air Force veteran, is once again calling on Central New Yorkers to support our troops this holiday season by donating their used cell phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers. Major Martin Debock, executive officer for the Syracuse Army Recruiting Battalion, Master Sergeant Peter Palumb, and Mark Burns, public affairs specialist for the battalion,joined Senator DeFrancisco at a press conference to discuss the importance of helping our troops stay connected.

Celebrating Veterans Day in Rochester

Earlier on this Veterans Day, Senator Robach had the privilege to speak at, and take part in, a ceremony at The Blue Cross Arena at Rochester War Memorial. Senator Robach was honored to present the wreath on behalf of the Town of Greece with Supervisor John Auberger. It was great to meet so many of our veterans that live in our community. Thank you again to all the men and women who have served our country, and continue to do so today.

Hilton Veterans Day Celebration

On Wednesday, November 9th, Hilton held its Veterans Day ceremony, which included the dedication of the Veterans Wall at Hilton Town Hall. Over 300 students from elementary and middle schools around Hilton attended this event. Also, U.S. Army Sgt. David Earl Lemcke of Hilton returned home. Veterans, emergency personnel, and members of the community welcomed home Lemcke more than 40 years after he was killed serving our Country. Calling hours will be held on Friday. Saturday, his funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. at First Bible Baptist Church on Manitou Road.

Sets Goal to Collect 100 Worn US Flags to Cheer Service Men and Women Abroad

State Senator Patty Ritchie announced that she is seeking 100 worn, tattered and faded American flags during the month of October as part of her “Stars for Our Troops” campaign to cheer 5,000 US service men and women overseas with a simple, patriotic reminder of home.

“The men and women of our military spend months in strange and dangerous lands far from home to protect the flag and the freedom it represents,” said Senator Ritchie. “This campaign allows us to retire a worn and used American flag in a dignified way that also tells a member of the US military that he or she is remembered, appreciated and respected.”

Governor Cuomo Signs Bills To Limit Protests at Military Funerals

Ronkonkoma, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I Shirley) announced today that Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed into law Senator Zeldin’s bill to limit protests at military funerals.

In keeping with his 2010 campaign promises, Senator Zeldin sponsored and delivered passage of a series of bills, one of them named after Specialist Thomas J. Wilwerth, an Iraq War Veteran who lost his life in combat in 2006.

The bills, sponsored by Senators Lee Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley) and Joseph Griffo (R-C, Rome), balance the constitutional right of free speech with the need to protect families mourning the loss of their fallen servicemember.

"New York Remembers" Exhibitions Commemorate Tenth Anniversary Of September 11th

ONEONTA, 09/09/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today reminded New Yorkers that thirty “New York Remembers” exhibitions are now open statewide marking the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 

“A decade has passed since the cowardly 9/11 attacks on America changed our lives forever,” said Senator Seward.  “Each and every community across our state felt the impact of that horrific day and in the days following the attacks, leaned on one another for support and compassion. I applaud Governor Cuomo for involving locations statewide in this tenth anniversary memorial – we shall never forget.”
