Senate Passes Legislation to Limit Protests at Military Funerals, Additional Legislation to Support Veterans

The New York State Senate Monday passed legislation (S.3901) that would limit protests at military funerals.  Called “The Specialist Thomas Wilwerth Military Dignity Act,” the proposed law is named for an Iraq War Veteran who lost his life in combat in 2006.

 

 

This legislation is part of a package of Veterans bills that was passed by the Senate Monday. 

 

 

In addition, the Senate passed legislation that would significantly enhance the protection of property, rights and services available to current and former military personnel. The seven bills would build upon the Senate’s ongoing commitment to increase support for veterans and their families.

O'Mara-sponsored legislation to strengthen military voting signed into law

Albany, N.Y., March 9—New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law today legislation (S.3500) sponsored by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), chairman of the Senate Elections Committee, to ensure that special elections in New York State provide more time for military absentee ballots to be mailed and counted.

The occasion marks the first piece of legislation that O'Mara has sponsored as a member of the Senate that’s been signed into law.  Prior to his election to the Senate last November, O'Mara served as a state assemblyman for three consecutive terms beginning in 2004.

Valentine's for Vets

Honoring Our Troops This Valentine’s Day

 

(Pearl River, NY) Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland) joined students from the Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Pearl River to box up hundreds of Valentine’s Day cards to be sent to our troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The cards were made by elementary school children from 22 schools in Rockland county.  After being boxed up, the cards will be sent overseas and distributed by Commanding Officers and Chaplains to the men and women who are serving our country this Valentine’s Day.
