Legislature Gives Final Approval to Bills Limiting Military Funeral Protests

The New York State Senate today gave final legislative approval to two measures that offer additional buffers and restrictions for protests or demonstrations seeking to disrupt military funerals, burials or memorial services. The bills, sponsored by Senators Lee Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley) and Joseph Griffo (R-C, Rome), balance the constitutional right of free speech with the ability of families to respectfully mourn the individuals who gave their lives in service to our country.

Prevents Disruption While Families Mourn Fallen Heroes

State Senator Patty Ritchie said a measure she cosponsored that received final legislative approval will help prevent protesters from disrupting military funerals, burials and memorial services.

“When our military families gather to mourn and bid farewell to our fallen heroes, New York State owes it to them to protect them from those who would insult their sacrifice by exploiting these solemn occasions to stage protests and publicity stunts,” Senator Ritchie said. “By using the same kind of regulations that currently allow us to protect parades and demonstrations, we can insure that constitutional free speech rights are protected while grieving families are allowed to pay their final goodbyes to loved ones who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

6/14/2011: Veteran's Hall of Fame Honoree Jackie L. Wilson

Sergeant Major Jackie L. Wilson Award: Veterans' Hall of Fame Year: 2011 District: District 10 Sergeant Major Jackie L. Wilson had a distinguished 24 year career in the United States Army Reserve. During his service, Mr. Jackson led his men on and off the battlefield. He served active duty in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm 1990-1991, and was also called to active duty for Freedom Iraq but was unable to be mobilized due to his health. “How To Care For and Honor The Flag” Information Now Available At Gallivan’s Office

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan announced today that his office will be honoring Flag Day and National Flag Week by providing the public with valuable information regarding the history of Old Glory and guidelines for its proper handling.

“Flag Day and National Flag Week is a special time of the year when all Americans try to do something special to honor the flag and all it represents. Colonel Mercado-Sconzo, of Pleasantville, NY, was deployed to Abu Ghraib prison in March of 2005 to serve as officer in charge of the detainee camps and emergency room shortly after the prisoner abuse and torture scandal was exposed.

OSWEGO COUNTY VETERANS INDUCTED INTO ‘HALL OF FAME’

Senator Patty Ritchie (R-C, Heuvelton) celebrated Flag Day Tuesday by helping to induct the Oswego County “Battle of the Bulge” Veterans into the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame.

"When American soldiers threw back the German offensive during World War II in the conflict that we now call the "Battle of the Bulge," they literally saved the world," Senator Ritchie said in a video tribute. "Those soldiers helped bring an end to the Nazi domination of Europe and paved the way for a new era of peace and Democracy that has flourished across Europe over the past half century.
