10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION AND FORT DRUM DAY CELEBRATED AT STATE CAPITOL

State Senator Patty Ritchie welcomed 10th Mountain Division Commanding General, Major General Stephen Townsend and troops to the Capitol Tuesday for 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Day. 

The event—which is in its fourth consecutive year—celebrated Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division’s contributions to the North Country region, the state and our nation.  Joining General Townsend were Colonel Gary Rosenberg, Fort Drum Garrison Commander; Captain Scott Dawe, Commanding General’s Aide; Lieutenant Colonel Tage Rainsford, Public Affairs Officer and more than four dozen soldiers and officers who serve with the 10th Mountain Division.

“Year after year, 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Day has allowed my colleagues in Albany to see firsthand the impact that the post and its troops have on our entire state—not just the North Country,” said Senator Patty Ritchie.

PROTECT THE POST: RITCHIE SCORES $500,000 TO HELP SECURE FUTURE OF FORT DRUM

Senator Also Wants Additional "Base Retention" Funding in New State Budget

State Senator Patty Ritchie is announcing $500,000 in new state funding to secure additional "buffer areas" around Fort Drum that are critical to preserving the future of the military post.

The $500,000 comes from a special "military base retention" budget account, aimed at supporting efforts to enhance and protect Fort Drum and other military installations. This year, Senator Ritchie is seeking to increase funding for military base retention in the new state budget that's due April 1st.  In recent years, she has played a key role in filling the account help preserve Fort Drum and other military installations across the state.

 “Right now, more than ever, it’s critical that we make protecting and enhancing Fort Drum one of our top priorities,” said Senator Ritchie.

Senator Catharine M. Young presents the French Legion of Honor Medal to Anthony “Tony” Costanzo.

JAMESTOWN – Anthony “Tony” Costanzo, United States Army (Ret.), who courageously served as a member of the First Infantry Division known as the “Big Red One” in some of the first American battles in the North African and European Theaters during World War II, recently received his decoration as a member of France’s Légion d’honneu, or Legion of Honor.

Chanukah is the celebration of Miracles!

"Chanukah is the celebration of miracles, a reminder that all things are possible," Senator Parker said.  "As you celebrate the spirit of Chanukah with friends and family, I wish you health, happiness and good fortune." The holiday celebrates a legendary victory of the Maccabees, a band of Jews, over a Greek army that occupied the Holy Land.  After the battle, the victorious Maccabees found only a one day supply of oil in the temple to light the lamps.  But the oil burned miraculously for eight days, the story says.

Senator Gianaris, Assemblywoman Simotas Secure Increased Property Tax Relief for Veterans

Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas joined community and veteran leaders and Senator Joe Addabbo, Ranking Member of the Senate Veterans Committee, to announce that their bill to provide increased property tax relief to veterans has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo, bringing our veterans property tax exemption into the 21st century by updating a decades-old benefit for those who have served our country. The bill will immediately raise the property tax exemption for veterans from $5,000 to $7,500, remedying the effects of inflation on a policy meant to make life easier for servicemen and women returning home.

Nearly 25 Years After His Passing Cattaraugus County Veteran Honored with Awards Earned in Service

MACHIAS - Family and friends gathered this afternoon to recognize the outstanding military service of U.S. Army veteran Robert Henry Fuller, who has finally received the military decorations he earned defending our country.

During a ceremony at the Glenn A. Pratt, Jr. American Legion Post No. 1460 in Machias, Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C-Olean) joined in presenting Private First Class Fuller’s family with the military medals he earned while serving overseas during World War II.
