Senate Ups Property Tax Breaks For Cold War Veterans

Measure equalizes vet tax break & extends it to co-op apartments

Cold War veterans will be eligible for the same property tax breaks as veterans of foreign wars under legislation the state Senate approved Monday.

The measure, sponsored by Senator Joseph Addabbo (D-Queens), lets towns and cities offer higher property tax exemptions to Cold War veterans, bringing them in line with the tax breaks offered to other vets.  It also covers veterans in owner-occupied co-op apartments as well.

Senate Passes Property Tax Breaks For Cold War Veterans

Measure puts Cold War vets on par with others & also extends to co-ops (Albany, NY) The New York State Senate today recognized the service and sacrifice of Cold War veterans by voting to allow for local municipalities to increase the level of property tax breaks available to these veterans. Under the current law, Cold War vets are not offered the same breaks as other “combat” veterans.

Senator Winner offers his thoughts on the observance of Memorial Day.

Americans have observed Memorial Day for over a century, since the time of the Civil War. 

It remains a grounding, powerful, and solemn occasion when citizens gather to honor our veterans, to recall their sacrifices, and to remember that American soldiers still serve to protect freedom and preserve peace throughout the world.

This weekend Americans will gather in small cemeteries.  We will come together in city parks and town squares and village greens in poignant remembrance.

Sen Adams Calls on Mayor Bloomberg to Close Public Schools to Stem the Possible Spread of the H1N1 Virus

NYS Senators Eric Adams, Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee and Hiram Monserrate call on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to close NYC public schools on Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22 as a precautionary measure against the spread of the H1N1 virus that has caused such great concern over the past month.  This creates a 5-day window to insure a safe environment and inform parents about prevention techniques, both designed to stem any possible spread of the H1N1 virus.
