Aubertine UTV Bill Moves Out of Committee

 

Bill would redefine ATV in state law to make side-by-side vehicles legal up to 1,500lbs

ALBANY (April 27, 2010)—The New York State Senate Transportation Committee today moved legislation sponsored by Sen. Aubertine (S.4277) that would allow all-terrain vehicle riders to legally register and ride side-by-side ATVs on trail systems throughout the state.

The committee voted 16-1, meaning the bill—which has an Assembly sponsor—will be eligible for consideration soon on the Senate floor.

GRIFFO URGES PARKS OFFICIALS: ‘GET CREATIVE’ TO AVERT CLOSINGS

(Albany) - State Senator Joseph A Griffo (R-IP-C, Rome) today called on parks officials to “get creative” in identifying ways to prevent closing parks and campgrounds just weeks before the start of the busy tourist and travel seasons.With the state budget nearly two weeks late, parks officials were again warning that they will close or severely cut back operations at 77 facilities across the state, including a large number in Central and Northern New York, even as they acknowledged the closings would have a serious impact on local economies.

WIVB: Senate dems committed to saving parks

On Monday, the Majority Conference unanimously voted for a budget resolution which restored all $11.5 million of the Governor’s budget cuts to parks operations. If enacted, the cut would have resulted in the closure of 57 State Parks and reduced operations at an additional 22 State Parks.

Senator Serrano And Majority Conference Urge Compliance To Maintain Federal Parks Funding

Senator Jose M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) and the Senate Majority Conference announced opposition today to the National Parks Service’s threat to withhold federal funding as a result of the Governor’s proposal to close facilities within the State parks system. The Majority -- who led the fight against proposed cuts to parks funding, which would have closed dozens of locations -- urged the Governor to work with the federal Administration to determine a plan of action which maintains parks operations and does not endanger federal monies.

STATE OFFICIALS AGREE TO CHANGE NAME OF LEATHERSTOCKING REGION

(Utica) - Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R/IP/C - Rome) and Assemblywoman RoAnn M. Destito (D-Rome) announced that New York State, for tourism purposes, will be officially retiring the designation “Central Leatherstocking Region” and renaming the seven county area as “Central New York”.

The formerly known “Central Leatherstocking Region” encompasses the seven upstate counties of Broome, Chenango, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego and Schoharie.

Sen. Valesky Proposes Bill to Encourage More Fishing-based Rehabilitation Events for Veterans

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) has introduced legislation (S.7041) that would encourage more fishing events that provide physical and emotional rehabilitation for veterans or active duty members of the armed forces. 

“Providing our veterans and active duty personnel, who have sacrificed bravely for our country, with more opportunities to learn the rehabilitative nature of fishing is a small way of saying thank you,” Senator Valesky said.
