Senator Fuschillo's Distracted Driving Prevention Program

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) will be holding a roundtable discussion at Lindenhurst High School to help raise awareness about the growing problem of distracted driving.

Those participating in the discussion will be:

Jacy Good, who was permanently injured and lost her parents in a crash caused by a distracted driver;
Trooper Frank Bandiero, New York State Police;
Kristen Curran, a senior at Lindenhurst High School who recently obtained her driver's license;
Students from Ms. Dowd's Dock Law Class, all of whom are seniors and licensed drivers.

Senate Passes Tiffany's Law

The New York State Senate today passed “Tiffany’s Law”, sponsored by Senator John A. DeFrancisco (R-C-I, Syracuse). The bill (S.1790) would require all prior convictions of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, whether it be an automobile (DWI), snowmobile (SWI), or all-terrain vehicle, to be considered during sentencing of a subsequent Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) conviction. In turn, any person convicted of BWI would have that charge considered during any subsequent DWI, SWI or ATV offense.

Knickerbocker Ave M Station Reopen, Rehabilitation Complete

Senator Dilan recently joined MTA New York City Transit President Thomas Prendergast to formally unveil the newly refurbished Knickerbocker Avenue M Line Station on Myrtle Avenue. The station was closed from August 18, 2012 to February 8, 2013 for rehabilitation.

The Knickerbocker Avenue M Station rehabilitation is one of a handful of upgrades the MTA has completed, and one of many slated for completion this year. These are necessary upgrades and I commend the MTA and Interim President Thomas Prendergast for recognizing a need and delivering for the riders of the M Line. I look forward to working with stakeholders and the MTA as more of these service restorations and upgrades are completed.

Senator Kennedy Presses DOT for Answers on Skyway, Regional Funding Disparities at Transportation Budget Hearing

DOT Commissioner says it is the intention of the department to “use all their best efforts” to deliver promised funds to WNY. 

Commissioner confirmed Skyway ‘plausibility review’ is underway, says she will come to Buffalo to discuss review findings. Also confirms review findings will not just be laid aside and ignored.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO PROTECT NEW YORKERS FROM DRUNK DRIVERS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Committee has approved legislation to help strengthen the state’s DUI laws and protect individuals from drunk drivers.

     “Drunk drivers endanger innocent lives every time they choose to get behind the wheel, regardless of the type of vehicle. Strengthening our laws and closing legal loopholes will give law enforcement greater tools to catch and prosecute drunk drivers and help to make our roads safer for everyone,” said Senator Fuschillo.

Governor Cuomo Outlines 2013-2014 Executive Budget to Maintain Fiscal Responsibility and Continue to Invest in Economic Growth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo unveiled the proposed 2013-14Executive Budget and Management Plan that builds on two years of balanced, fiscally responsible budgeting and invests in economic development, education reform, rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy, provides support to local governments and school districts, and includes no new taxes or fees.

Highlights of the Executive Budget:

· Eliminates $1.3 billion budget gap with no new taxes or fees. The expected gap for 2013-14 was projected to be $17.4 billion prior to the last two responsible budgets.

· Holds spending increases below 2 percent for third consecutive year.

Kennedy Remains Top Ranking Democrat on Economic Development Committee, Earns Place on Finance Committee

Assignments to important committee posts follow Leader Stewart-Cousins move to make Kennedy a part of her leadership team. 

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senator Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, today announced his committee assignments for the 2013 legislative session. Kennedy will retain his position as the ranking Democratic member on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business. He also earned a post on the Senate Finance Committee, which will give the Senator a larger influence on legislation that carries fiscal implications for the state.
