BILL NUMBER: S4652 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the education law, in relation to establishing community district education council selection committees within New York city community school districts to assist the New York city department of education in selecting candidates to fill principal and other supervisory service positions PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : This amendment would create district interview committees to help in the decision making process of the selection of candidates for important positions such as principal and other supervisory positions. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : S 1 The education law is amended by adding a new section 2590-t. JUSTIFICATION : This bill would give a voice to parents, teachers, supervisors and members of the District Education Council in the selection of principals and community superintendents. Under the new procedure of governance the chancellor has sole discretion in the process and does not need to consult with any other groups or individuals. The interview committee would make advisory recommendations by presenting a list of names the chancellor would select from. This bill would further enhance the role of the community education council, which presently has no role to play in the selection process for community superintendent or principal.
