BILL NUMBER: S539 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the education law, in relation to the authority of school personnel who are trained emergency medical technicians to administer emergency treatment on school premises PURPOSE : To permit any person who is EMT trained to provide emergency medical treatment on school grounds. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section 1: creates a new section of the Education Law 912-c. Authorizes school personnel who are trained emergency medical technicians to administer emergency medical treatment on the school premises as they are otherwise trained to provide off premises. EXISTING LAW : Currently, only school nurses are allowed to provide emergency medical treatment on school premises. JUSTIFICATION : Currently, trained emergency medical technicians (EMT) who are employed in schools are prohibited by regulation from using their training to assist a school nurse in the case of a medical emergency.

ALESI -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the authority of school personnel who are trained emergency medical technicians to administer emergency treatment on school premises THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 912-c to read as follows: S 912-C. AUTHORITY OF SCHOOL PERSONNEL WHO ARE TRAINED EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS TO ADMINISTER EMERGENCY TREATMENT. IN THE EVENT OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY OCCURRING ON SCHOOL PREMISES, SCHOOL PERSONNEL IN EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT OF THE STATE WHO ARE ALSO TRAINED AS EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS ARE HEREBY AUTHORIZED TO ADMINISTER SUCH EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT ON THE SCHOOL PREMISES AS THEY ARE OTHERWISE TRAINED TO PROVIDE OFF THE PREMISES.
