BY: Senator COMRIE

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor
Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim January 29, 2018, as
Library Shelfie Day in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those community based organizations which unselfishly devote their
energy, resources and thoughtful care on behalf of improving the quality
and character of life in that community; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim January 29, 2018, as
Library Shelfie Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National Library Shelfie Day; and

WHEREAS, A library shelfie is like a selfie, but taken with books;
the New York Public Library founded Library Shelfie Day to encourage
young readers and all book lovers to visit their local library and take
pictures of themselves in front of the beautifully organized library
books; the photos are then posted on social media to convey the reader's
love of a good book; and

WHEREAS, Thousands of photos have been submitted by individuals,
libraries, and other groups, using the hashtag libraryshelfie; each and
every photo has been unique, whether it was of bookshelves arranged in
rainbow order, cats on bookshelves, or photos of people hiding behind
books; and

WHEREAS, Although taking selfies in a library is usually frowned
upon, anything that brings attention to reading is a positive movement;
and

WHEREAS, The citizens of the State of New York stand firmly
committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' future
academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of the future,
and their ability to compete in a global economy; and

WHEREAS, Our nation's libraries may take just pride in its
purposeful growth, as it looks forward to continuing to serve the
educational, cultural and intellectual needs of its communities; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim January 29, 2018, as
Library Shelfie Day in the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
