BILL NUMBER: S3553 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the state law, in relation to designating the quartz variety Herkimer Diamond as the official state mineral PURPOSE : The purpose of this legislation is to designate the Herkimer Diamond as the official mineral of New York State. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : The legislation adds a new section 88 to the state law naming the quartz variety Herkimer Diamond as the official mineral of the state. JUSTIFICATION : New York State has previously designated an official gemstone (garnet), fossil (sea scorpion), shell (bay scallop), bush (lilac), salt water fish (striped bass), and reptile (snapping turtle), to name a few. Currently, there is no official state mineral. Doubly terminated quartz crystals from the Mohawk region are commonly referred to as Herkimer Diamonds due to their diamond shape, and are a unique find to this region of the United States. SEWARD -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Investigations and Govern- ment Operations AN ACT to amend the state law, in relation to designating the quartz variety Herkimer Diamond as the official state mineral THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The state law is amended by adding a new section 91 to read as follows: § 91. STATE MINERAL. THE QUARTZ VARIETY HERKIMER DIAMOND SHALL BE THE OFFICIAL MINERAL OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD03695-01-7
