HONORING James Dillabough upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2021 Oswego County
Veteran of the Year Award
WHEREAS, Within every community there exists certain individuals who
have played an important role in helping the people and families of
Central New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
those individuals in Oswego County and New York State who have
demonstrated great selflessness and care for one's community; and
WHEREAS, James Dillabough was recently honored by the Oswego County
Legislature as Oswego County's 2021 Veteran of the Year; and
WHEREAS, James Dillabough enlisted in the United States Navy in 1961
at the age of 17, attending boot camp at Great Lakes Training Center
before being assigned to the U.S.S. Springfield CL G-7, a light cruiser
missile-carrying warship; and
WHEREAS, This experienced veteran served in Spain and later in
France, eventually serving as the personal driver for the Chief of Staff
to the 6th fleet commander; and
WHEREAS, After completing his tour of duty, he came home to Oswego
and worked at Columbia Mills in Minetto, New York, and later for the
Oswego City School District; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to his
community, James Dillabough tirelessly devoted thousands of hours to
helping area veterans and his community, planting flags on Memorial Day,
visiting hospitalized veterans, driving the Disabled American Veterans
van, volunteering with the Elks Club, and performing other services to
make life better for others; and
WHEREAS, Through his service to his country and his community, James
Dillabough has made a lasting, positive impact on our region and our
nation, making a difference in the lives of countless individuals; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor James Dillabough upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2021 Oswego County Veteran of the Year Award, recognizing his
contributions as a member of the United States Armed Services and as a
dedicated member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to James Dillabough.
