COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of The
Canarsie Courier
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Canarsie Courier; and
WHEREAS, In light of its centennial celebration, The Canarsie
Courier will feature stories which highlight its distinguished history
over the past 100 years, including "Little Old Canarsie", a favorite
column written by the late Canarsie historian, John Denton, which has
not been published for many years; and
WHEREAS, The Canarsie Courier, published every Thursday, is
Brooklyn's oldest weekly newspaper covering the southeastern communities
of Canarsie, Marine Park, Mill Basin, Georgetown, Gerritsen Beach,
Bergen Beach, Kings Plaza, Sheepshead Bay, Flatlands, Flatbush, East New
York and Spring Creek; and
WHEREAS, Founded by Walter S. Patrick and Lester J. Stillwell on
April 22, 1921, and then reorganized by Walter S. Patrick in 1923, The
Canarsie Courier continued to be published by Edward M. Herrschaft from
1935 to 1959, when it was purchased by Bob Samitz and Joe Samitz; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Samitz family ran the paper until 1998,
when it was sold to Donna Marra and Sandra Greco; Donna Marra became the
sole publisher in 2010; and
WHEREAS, While its focus is on the most up-to-date local community
news, The Canarsie Courier also offers a variety of features for the
discriminating reader, plus local sports and opinion columns; and
WHEREAS, The Canarsie Courier can be found on most newsstands in the
coverage area and is also mailed to subscribers; in addition, it can be
viewed online at www.canarsiecourier.com; and
WHEREAS, In today's digital age, while many newspapers are either
becoming obsolete or taken over by larger media outlets, The Canarsie
Courier is proud to have remained an independent newspaper since its
founding a century ago; and
WHEREAS, Our newspapers provide a tremendous service to citizens
across the State of New York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State and Nation is strengthened by a
responsible citizenry which is actively engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and
WHEREAS, As The Canarsie Courier moves into the future, it carries
with it the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history and an
outstanding record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Canarsie Courier; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Canarsie Courier.
