COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of the
Montefiore Nyack Hospital

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality of life in the communities across this great State of New
York is enriched by the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations of distinction whose singular purpose is the care and
welfare of others; and

WHEREAS, Our hospitals serve the vital purpose of providing for the
healthcare needs of our citizens through excellence in the delivery of
medical services; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
125th Anniversary of the Montefiore Nyack Hospital; and

WHEREAS, From a two-story structure with nine beds, an operating
room, a nurse's parlor, a reception area and a dining room, to a 391-bed
acute care medical and surgical facility, Montefiore Nyack Hospital has
grown as technology and medical needs have changed; and

WHEREAS, As the hospital on Midland Avenue marks its 125th
anniversary, it looks back at its history and forward toward an
ambitious $24 million, two-phase expansion; and

WHEREAS, Montefiore Nyack Hospital celebrated the opening of its
cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center earlier in 2021 and recently
dedicated the opening of phase one of the new F.J. Borelli Family
Emergency Center; and

WHEREAS, Nyack Hospital joined the Montefiore Health System in 2014,
and the hospital was renamed Montefiore Nyack Hospital in 2018; it
partners with Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, providing clinical
rotations to third-year medical students; and

WHEREAS, The hospital was incorporated in June 1895, and proposed
drawings for its site plan were presented by Marshall B. Emery, a local
architect; and

WHEREAS, The Women's Auxiliary was formed on September 17, 1900,
with 17 ladies in attendance at the first meeting; that same year,
bicycles, the hospital's first vehicles, were built for the use of the
nurses; and

WHEREAS, In 1919, the hospital Acquired its first motorized vehicle,
a little red ambulance; and

WHEREAS, By 1927, the hospital had admitted 2,066 patients,
approximately 5% of the area population; and

WHEREAS, The two-story addition to the front of the building was
completed in 1937; this space housed a new lobby on the first floor and

a superintendent's apartment, two rooms for interns and a room for the
director of nurses; and

WHEREAS, In 1949, the hospital's bed capacity increased to 104; and

WHEREAS, The Premature Nursery Center opened in 1968, providing care
for infants born at Nyack Hospital, transported from other hospitals or
from home; and

WHEREAS, In 1977, the Conference room was dedicated in memory of Dr.
Frederick A. Schroeder Sr., who practiced medicine for nearly 50 years
before his death in 1976; Schroeder's son, Dr. Frederick A. Schroeder
Jr., an internist at Nyack Hospital, accepted his father's portrait,
which was hung in the Maze Pavilion; and

WHEREAS, On August 25, 1981, phase one of a modernization and
renovation program began; and

WHEREAS, The Emergency Medical Services System in Rockland County
was implemented in 1993, and paramedics were trained on Advanced Life
Support Services; and

WHEREAS, In 1995, the hospital opened a 21-bed Ambulatory Care
Center; and

WHEREAS, In 2016, the hospital unveiled its state-of-the-art 3D
Mammography Tomosynthesis System; and

WHEREAS, One year later, the hospital launched the Triage emergency
communication system, enabling first responders to send live data from
the scene of an emergency to the Emergency Department, informing staff
of the critical patient and situational information almost immediately;
and

WHEREAS, Last year, Montefiore Nyack Hospital provided care for over
1,100 positive or presumed positive COVID-19 patients; the intensive
care space tripled by retrofitting existing units to be able to treat
the surge of patients; during several weeks, it had 200 or more COVID-19
patients, representing approximately 72% of its medical-surgical beds
and ventilator use was increased six fold; and

WHEREAS, The outpouring of support from the community during
COVID-19 response included donations of food, personal protective
equipment, homemade masks, thank you signs, songs and drive-by visits;
and

WHEREAS, Today, Montefiore Nyack Hospital is proud to celebrate its
400th patient to recover from the coronavirus; and

WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Mark Geller, President and
CEO, the achievements of Montefiore Nyack Hospital are the direct result
of its physicians, nurses, employees and volunteers, all of whom have
committed themselves to making a difference in the lives of those they
serve; and

WHEREAS, Montefiore Nyack Hospital, and its expert staff, has had a
long and sustained commitment to the health and welfare of its patients,

and therefore merits the highest commendation of this Legislative Body;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Montefiore Nyack Hospital; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Mark Geller, President and CEO, Montefiore Nyack
Hospital.
