HONORING Beverly Roberts posthumously upon the
occasion of the renaming of a street in the
Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, New York, in
recognition of her community service and remarkable
life

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Beverly
Roberts posthumously upon the occasion of the renaming of a street in
the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, New York, in recognition of
her community service and remarkable life to be celebrated at a Ceremony
on Thursday, June 9, 2022; and

WHEREAS, For almost 50 years, Beverly Roberts was a vital and
important part of her Parkchester community, serving as an advocate for
human and civil rights of all people; and

WHEREAS, Beverly Roberts was actively involved with the NAACP
Parkchester Branch for many years, holding the leadership positions of
President, 1st Vice President, Chair of the Civic Engagement Committee,
Chair of Women in the NAACP, and consultant to Special Projects; and

WHEREAS, This compassionate and kind woman also volunteered her time
and energy to numerous organizations including Cancer Care's Look
Good-Feel Good Program, a literacy program, and Read to Me, Please,
which she founded; she also counseled young adults and displaced workers
with job search training, developed a workshop for visually impaired
first time job seekers, sponsored activities in shelters for children,
educated parents about the importance of child vehicle restraints, and
distributed hundreds of free car seats; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Beverly Roberts helped educate students in
Gambia, West Africa, and during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she
diligently worked to bring a family from the Gulf Coast to reside in
Parkchester with free accommodations for one year; and

WHEREAS, For her steadfast and unremitting commitment to her
community, Beverly Roberts was the recipient of numerous awards and
accolades including the 7th Congressional District's Outstanding Public
Service Award, the NAACP National Thalheimer Award, the Parkchester
Baptist Church's Outstanding Leadership and Service Award, and was named
the NAACP Woman of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Beverly Roberts died on October 12, 2020, and until that
last

day of her life, she lived by her mantra "strive not to be a success,
but rather to be of value"; and


WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Beverly Roberts displayed
throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Beverly Roberts posthumously upon the occasion of the renaming of
a street in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, New York, in
recognition of her community service and remarkable life; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Beverly Roberts.
