WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those organizations of commitment and high achievement whose
purpose and endeavors have been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence
in the education of the youth of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Organizations which seek to enhance the education of our
youngest students help to provide children a solid knowledge base upon
which to build their future studies; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Wyandanch Day Care Center, Inc. upon the occasion of its 40th Anni-
versary to be celebrated on Sunday, March 1, 2009; and
WHEREAS, In April 1967, sixteen Wyandanch residents were retained as
staff members of the Community Action Center, all of whom had young
children who were in need of day care; however, at that time, there were
no affordable options available to them; and
WHEREAS, The concerned group of parents came together and formed "The
Mother's Club," and took direct action toward a solution by formally
presenting their problem to the Board of Education of the Wyandanch
Public Schools and requesting that it provide suitable space to house
the children involved; and
WHEREAS, The Board of Education acceded to this request and a class-
room in the Straight Path School was set aside for use by The Mother's
Club to provide day care for the children; and
WHEREAS, By July, many more community mothers had begun to request
that their children be allowed to participate in this wonderful program;
The Mother's Club recognized that there was a great need in the Wyan-
danch community for a regular Day Care Center and planning began to make
this a reality; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, The Mother's Club was servicing approximately 35
children in the Day Care Program, necessitating a move from the Straight
Path classroom to an empty building of the Wyandanch School District on
the grounds of its Milton L. Olive School; unfortunately, this building
did not meet the standard requirements of the New York State Department
of Social Services; and
WHEREAS, Realizing the impending crisis, The Mother's Club took the
necessary steps to seek incorporation status in order to embark on a
path to create a viable Day Care Center in Wyandanch; the Wyandanch Day
Care Center Fund, Inc. was incorporated in the State of New York in July
1969; and
WHEREAS, Forty years later, children, aged six weeks to 12-years-old,
continue to discover the spirit of learning at Wyandanch Day Care
Center, Inc., where each child's unique strength and learning style is
respected; and
WHEREAS, The Center's trained teachers develop each child's potential
through an enriched curriculum that is multi-cultural, multi-sensory and
includes touching, smelling, seeing, feeling, tasting, hearing and
loving; and
WHEREAS, While manners, kindness, and mutual respect permeate the
Center, the entire curriculum experience promotes self-help skills,
physical development, listening skills, health and safety, social and
emotional growth, cultural sensitivity, as well as motor and cognitive
development; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished history, the Wyandanch Day Care
Center, Inc. has offered children the opportunity to enhance their qual-

ity of life by providing them with a safe, supportive atmosphere while
participating in recreational and educational activities; and
WHEREAS, The children of today are the citizens and leaders of tomor-
row; their health, well-being and development are of paramount import to
the people of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is only fitting that this Legislative Body extend its
highest commendation to the administration, teachers, staff and parents,
both past and present, of the Wyandanch Day Care Center, Inc., for their
dedication and commitment to the children, school and community in the
creation of a better world for the children of tomorrow; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
