LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Lycee Francais de New York for its
outstanding commitment to community service

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate the pursuit
of excellence in education and service to the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Lycee Francais de New York for its outstanding commitment to commu-
nity service; and
WHEREAS, A Pre-Kindergarten through grade-12 school, the Lycee Fran-
cais de New York holds the unique distinction of being one of the most
renowned international, bilingual and multicultural schools in New York;
and
WHEREAS, The Lycee Francais de New York welcomes students from more
than 50 nationalities, giving them an education based on academic excel-
lence and personal growth; it educates them to become dynamic citizens,
capable of playing an important role in the future of the world; and
WHEREAS, In September of 2002, the Lycee Francais de New York initi-
ated a Community Service Program for its students; and
WHEREAS, Now in its 10th year, the Lycee Francais de New York Communi-
ty Service Program is comprised of 650 students who complete over 10,500
hours of service per year in both the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, Under the supervision of the Parks Department Volunteer Coor-
dinator, over 125 sixth-graders volunteer regularly at John Jay Park on
East 76th Street, doing whatever is needed including planting, raking,
cleaning or weeding; and
WHEREAS, Every week, throughout the school term, 4 students volunteer
at the Epiphany Church on York Avenue and 75th Street at its Wednesday
night dinners; altogether, nearly one-quarter of its middle and upper
school population has volunteered at this soup kitchen; and
WHEREAS, In addition, students at the Lycee Francais de New York can
often be found serving the community in numerous other capacities such
as, working with seniors, tutoring other youth, working at veterans
centers and homeless shelters, working with the mentally and physically
disabled, helping preserve the environment and working at animal shel-
ters, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, On an international level, many Lycee students spend their
summers and school breaks volunteering in hospitals, soup kitchens,
orphanages, and local schools in Lebanon, France, Morocco, Israel,
Guatemala, Spain, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Argentina and other
countries; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, the Lycee Francais de New York continuously
prepares boxes of used French language primary and secondary level text
books of various subject areas to be transported to other countries in
desperate need of instructional and reading materials; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, the
students of the Lycee Francais de New York now stand honorably, with
just pride in their accomplishments and in eager anticipation of future
challenges, understanding and appreciating the caring counsel and
support provided by their teachers and parents; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when young
people and institutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Lycee Francais de New York for its outstanding commitment to
community service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Lycee Francais de New York.
