LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Huntington High School Science Bowl
team upon the occasion of capturing the Long Island Regional Science
Bowl Championship

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals
and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Huntington High School Science Bowl team upon the occasion of capturing
the Long Island Regional Science Bowl Championship; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the United States Department of Energy's Office
of Science, the Science Bowl encourages students to excel in science and
math and pursue careers in those fields; about 9,500 high school and
4,500 middle school students participated in this year's Science Bowl
regional contests; and
WHEREAS, The Long Island regional competition was one of 120 such
regional contests being held throughout the country, including Puerto
Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; and
WHEREAS, A team of four exceptional Huntington High School students
captured the Long Island Regional Science Bowl championship on Saturday,
January 26, 2013, at Brookhaven National Lab in Upton, New York; the
team will now advance to the national finals in Washington, DC in April;
and
WHEREAS, The competition consisted of a fast-paced question-and-answer
tournament designed to test participants' knowledge in biology, chemis-
try, Earth and space science, energy, mathematics and physics; and
WHEREAS, Huntington moved through a series of grueling rounds, includ-
ing a tiebreaker with perennial powerhouse Ward Melville before topping
Great Neck South in the finals to win the regional crown; and
WHEREAS, The Huntington squad included team captain Brian Gilbert and
members Aron Coraor, Marc Feldman and Jacob Roday; junior Brian McCon-
nell also practiced with the team, and despite his absence from the
event, he was instrumental in their overall success; and
WHEREAS, The remarkable talent displayed by this team is due in great
part to the efforts of teachers Dame Forbes and Lori Kenny, skilled and
inspirational tutors, respected for their ability to develop potential
into excellence; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, these
scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their accomplishments
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by their teachers,
coaches and parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Huntington High School Science Bowl team upon the occasion of
capturing the Long Island Regional Science Bowl Championship; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Huntington High School Science Bowl team and teachers
Dame Forbes and Lori Kenny.
