Legislators support ‘buy American’ plan

With millions of federal stimulus dollars flowing into New York, two Democratic state legislators introduced legislation Wednesday that would mandate that the money be spent on Americanmade products and services.

Sen. William T. Stachowski of Lake View and Assemblyman Mark J. F. Schroeder of Buffalo unveiled a bill to mandate that stimulus funds purchase American-made goods like steel and iron within existing and listed limitations.

“We understand that pricing and availability could affect the purchase of American iron, steel and other products. However, we have laid out guidelines to make the purchase of these goods preferred and required whenever possible,” Stachowski said at United Steelworkers headquarters in Cheektowaga.
