State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach), today announced the availability of a free discount card that can reduce the cost of prescriptions for lower income New York State residents.   " New York State is offering a free pharmacy discount card that can lower the cost of prescription drugs by as much as 60 percent on generic drugs and 30 percent on brand name drugs", explained Senator Addabbo.

The discount card is for lower income individuals who are 50 to 64 years old, or persons with a disability regardless of age, and who are currently without prescription coverage.  Those with Medicaid coverage are not eligible.

Addabbo stated, "Most outpatient prescription drugs are eligible for a discount.  New York State is sponsoring the program with the support of a statewide network of over 3,700 pharmacies that are generously providing these discounts.  Pharmaceutical manufacturers are also being encouraged to join and provide additional discounts".

Applicants can apply online at http://nyprescriptionsaver.fhsc.com, download a New York Prescription Saver application from the website, or call the toll-free Helpline at 1-900-788-6917. Participating pharmacies and the discounted prices for drugs can also be found on the website.

"With the downturn in the economy, many individuals are finding it more difficult than ever to access their necessary prescription drugs.  I encourage anyone who may be eligible and is currently doing without their prescriptions to utilize this important program", Addabbo concluded.
