Senator Martins' Food Drive to Begin August 1

Senator Jack M. Martins is partnering with Long Island Cares as well as local communities to collect food for those in need during a drive from August 1-21. There will be Long Island Cares drop boxes for food collection throughout the Seventh Senate District for those wishing to donate food.

Long Island Cares the Harry Chapin Food Bank was founded by the late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. It is dedicated to providing food for those in need with the assistance of Long Island’s communities.

After visiting Long Island Cares, Senator Martins wanted to help the food bank. He reached out to all the villages in the Seventh Senate District to ask if they help host the food drive by placing a food collection box at their village hall.

Community members can donate food by dropping it in one of the food collection receptacles. Items needed include canned food, peanut butter and jelly, nuts, granola bars, cookies and crackers as well as dried good such as pasta, macaroni and cheese, rice and hot and cold cereals. Other packaged items can be donated as well.

Long Island Cares delivers food to over 560 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, group homes, day treatment facilities, senior nutrition sites and day care centers in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“Long Island Cares is such a valuable organization by providing food those in need. During this difficult economic time, there are families who are struggling. We should take the opportunity to help. I am proud to partner with Long Island Cares and I want to thank all the villages and their mayors for helping to host this food drive,” Senator Martins said. “We can all help make sure none of our neighbors are hungry by donating food.”

Food can be dropped off at Senator Martins’ District Office, 151 Herricks Road, Garden City Park, Suite 202, beginning August 1.
