Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) today invited residents to join him on an outdoor expedition as he hosts his 3rd Annual "Hike with Your Senator."   The event is designed to showcase Rockland County's sprawling mountains and scenic landscapes, providing outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to explore hidden hiking trails located within our state parks.

The gathering will take place on Sunday, September 15th, beginning at 8:30am at Old Ayers Road in Tomkins Cove. It is expected to last two hours as participants will travel through a moderate, three mile circular journey over uneven terrain, requiring some light to moderate climbing throughout the course.  Hikers should bring with them at least one liter of water and a snack for the trip.

This year, hikers will visit the unfinished and historical 1890 Dunderberg Spiral Railroad grades and tunnels

“New York State is blessed to have an array of beautiful state parks, but surprisingly not nearly enough residents know about what lies in their own backyards,” said Senator Carlucci.  “It is my hope that through these annual hikes, we can help market these recreational destinations beyond the Lower Hudson Valley and give the entire New York metropolitan region a reason to come visit."

In an effort to attract greater awareness of our state parks and increase tourism, Senator Carlucci  has also invited fellow colleague New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano (D-East Harlem) on to join the group.

"The Hudson River Valley Ramble is an amazing opportunity for us to come together as a community and celebrate the rich culture and history of the Hudson River,” said Senator Jose M. Serrano, Ranking Member of the Senate Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation Committee. “Whether it is hiking, paddling, or taking a bike tour with your family, this event enriches all of our lives and allows us to experience the great outdoors in our own backyard. Many thanks to Senator Carlucci and all of the organizers, sponsors, and participants for making this celebration a reality."

Last year, the hike teamed up with volunteer trail guide Bob Fuller, a member of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, which consists of more than 1,500 volunteers and maintains 1850 miles of trail.  The pack was led through multiple trails and a steep climb to the top of Pine Swamp Mountain.

In organizing this year’s trip, Senator Carlucci has linked up with the Hudson River Valley Ramble, an organization that celebrates the trails, rivers and historic and cultural resources of the Hudson River Valley Greenway and National Heritage Area.  The Ramble takes place over four weekends in September, and each year participation continues to grow.  Many people who take part in this event come not only from the Hudson Valley region, but from other regions of the country as well to discover the riches the Hudson Valley has to offer.

To reserve a spot, residents should call Senator Carlucci's office at (845) 623-3627.  For more information about the Hudson River Valley Ramble, please visit www.hudsonriverramble.com
