Senator Marchione: Need for EPA to take action on Dewey Loeffel Toxic Landfill and protect local families is an important message for Vice President Biden to take back to our nation’s capitol

Statement from Senator Kathleen A. Marchione (R,C-Halfmoon)

“I, and all New Yorkers, welcome Vice President Biden to our Capitol Region and the State Capitol today. While the Vice President is visiting, I sincerely hope that he will have an opportunity to learn more about the Dewey Loeffel Toxic Landfill and the urgent need for the Environmental Protection Agency to support a comprehensive public health study to ensure the safety and well-being of families in the Town of Nassau and surrounding communities across Columbia County. Along with the study, we need the federal government to make it clear that contamination stemming from any site remediation will not be allowed. I was part of a coalition of elected officials who stood with Nassau Supervisor Dave Fleming in calling for such a study and a halt to future contamination. The possible hazards posed by the Dewey Loeffel Toxic Landfill cannot be ignored and local families deserve answers that only a comprehensive public health study would provide. While we appreciate the EPA listing the Dewey Loeffel Toxic Landfill as a Superfund site, much more must be done. If there was a message that Vice President Biden could hear – and carry back with him to our nation’s capitol – it would be for the EPA to make such a study, and the prevention of future contamination, top public health priorities.”
