Senator Amedore to Host Disaster Preparedness Training

George A. Amedore, Jr.

August 10, 2015

Senator George Amedore, Assemblymember Patricia Fahy and Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today announced they will co-sponsor the New York State Citizens Preparedness Corps Training Program on Tuesday, August 11th, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Crossgates Mall in Albany.

The two-hour training session, presented by the New York National Guard, along with officials from the Division of Homeland Security and the New York State Office of Emergency Management, is designed to give New Yorkers the resources to prepare for and respond to natural or man-made disasters.

"Residents throughout the 46th Senate District, and all of New York, have been devastated by natural disasters, including flooding from Irene and Lee and extreme winter conditions. I encourage everyone to participate in this training. It’s a great way to help ensure your family and loved ones are prepared and have the resources and supplies needed in case of an emergency," said Senator Amedore.

"These emergency preparedness courses organized by New York State prepare residents with the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. This course can be very helpful to all families and residents in the Capital Region and I encourage all to attend," said Assemblymember Patricia A. Fahy.

"We all need to be prepared in the event of an emergency and what better way than to participate in the free training offered through New York State.  In Albany County, our Citizen Corps has done great work in making sure Albany County is prepared for an emergency.  Last year, they provided community preparedness trainings, developed communication plans with six agencies to assist vulnerable populations in an emergency, distributed over 30,000 preparedness resources, conducted an email messaging campaign to encourage county residents to get prepared, implemented a volunteer recruitment campaign and created and maintain RegisteredandReady.com a 24/7 website to recruit emergency response volunteers and provide community preparedness information.  I encourage those coming to the training to stop by the Albany County Citizen Corps table if you’d like to volunteer,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy.

The program, launched by the Governor in 2014 in response to devastating natural disasters, including Hurricanes Irene and Lee, is designed to advise New Yorkers how to best be prepared should an emergency situation arise, including creating a family emergency plan and making sure emergency supplies are properly stocked. The training prepares citizens for situations where they may be without power or telephone for several days, or longer.

Each participant will be given an emergency kit, which includes a first aid kit, emergency blanket, flashlight, a pocket radio, batteries, food, water, and other emergency supplies.

The event will be held at the newly built expansion in Crossgates Mall, on the first floor near Latitude 360. Preparedness training is free and open to the public, but attendees must register in advance at www.prepare.ny.gov.
