James L. Seward

JEFFERSON, 09/25/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that a recently adopted senate resolution includes, at his insistence, $125,000 to assist the Jefferson Central School District with budgetary needs.

“Our schools are faced with growing financial demands while, at the same time, student needs are also on the rise,” said Senator Seward.  “I am pleased to partner with the Jefferson Central School District in making certain that our students have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and thrive when they leave.”

The legislative grant secured by Senator Seward is being used to help fulfill the school district’s obligation in relation to an assessment settlement involving the Town of Jefferson and nonprofit Oorah.

“While school administrators try to prepare for all possible financial scenarios, there are times when costly situations surface unexpectedly.   That is the case in this instance where Jefferson Central School, through no fault of their own, was faced with a substantial expense that would have had a devastating impact on property taxpayers,” Seward added.

Jefferson Central School District Superintendent Brian Corey said, “As a small school district, we are faced with a number of unique challenges.  Senator Seward recognizes the obstacles we face and has partnered with us consistently to help make sure our students are not shortchanged.”

“Ensuring our local schools receive their fair share of state aid is a leading priority of mine.  The aid dollars translate to opportunities for our students, and tax relief for local property owners.  When unforeseen circumstances arise, I have pressed for grants like this to make sure students are not shortchanged and that taxpayers are not left holding the bag,” Seward concluded.
