Deadline for Enhanced STAR exemption applications is Sunday, March 1

Senator Rich Funke today reminded local seniors that the deadline to apply for the Enhanced STAR school property tax exemption is Sunday, March 1, 2015.

“New York’s property taxes are some of the highest in the nation and Enhanced STAR is one small way we can make it more affordable for seniors to stay in the place they call home,” said Funke. “If you turn age 65 or over this year and have questions about Enhanced STAR or want to apply, please reach out to my office and we can put you in touch with your local assessor.”

If a resident owns their primary residence and turns 65 or older at any time during the 2015 calendar year, they may qualify for the Enhanced STAR exemption.  The Enhanced exemption can be more than twice the value of the Basic STAR exemption. The Enhanced STAR exemption income threshold is $83,300 for the tax year of 2013.  For properties jointly owned by spouses or siblings, eligibility is based on the combined income of the owners.  If a resident exceeded $83,300 in income for tax year 2013, they may still be eligible to receive the Basic STAR exemption.

Seniors with questions about the Enhanced STAR exemption, or those seeking to apply for 2015, can contact Funke’s District Office by phone at (585) 223-1800 or by email at funke@nysenate.gov.
