Joint Statement From Senate Majority Coalition Co-Leaders John J. Flanagan And Jeffrey D. Klein

July 26, 2016

Earlier this year, the State Senate acted decisively on legislation to eradicate the sale of K2 and other synthetic drugs in New York.  Among the measures we approved were bills to create new criminal penalties for synthetic drugs, an analog bill to keep ahead of the chemists’ curve as new compounds come out, and measures to impose stiff civil penalties on businesses which sell synthetic cannabinoids.  Regrettably, the Assembly refused to join us.

Synthetic drugs are a serious and growing problem, and as leaders of the Majority Coalition we are committed to doing everything we can to stop the spread.  We thank the Governor for shining a light on this issue and salute the State Police for its exemplary work.  We look forward to continuing to be part of a dialogue that puts the health and safety of New Yorkers first, and helps to quickly reverse this alarming trend.
