Senator Murphy Comments on NRC's Annual Assessment of Indian Point

Albany, NY - Senator Terrence Murphy attended the inaugural task force meeting last month at Cortlandt Town Hall. Governor Cuomo announced the proposed closure of Indian Point in January. Tomorrow, the NRC will be holding its annual assessment of Indian Point in Tarrytown. Senator Murphy represents the areas most impacted by the proposed closure.
State Senator Terrence Murphy made the following comments:
"In January, Governor Cuomo announced an agreement to close Indian Point that was negotiated in secret and included no State or local elected officials. Now the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission appears to be doing the same by scheduling its annual assessment of Indian Point on a day that State Legislators cannot be present.
"The Legislative Calendar is a matter of public record and has been available since early January. The closure of Indian Point is of critical importance to my constituents and one of my top priorities.
"It is my hope that this is not evidence of the NRC's intent to proceed with the proposed closure without concern for involving all the stakeholders and elected representatives in the impacted area around Indian Point.
"The importance of this issue cannot be emphasized enough. Preventing lawmakers from having the ability to hear the NRC's assessment firsthand and ask questions to the experts is inexcusable."
