Renewable Cell Towers Act Passes State Senate

Brooklyn, N.Y – In this week’s legislative session in Albany, the New York State Senate passed Senator Kevin Parker’s bill requiring cellular telephone companies to invest in long-term solutions to ensure the state meets its climate goals to eliminate the use of nonrenewable energy sources. The legislation requires cellular service providers to submit plans to the New York State Public Service Commission to make all cell towers 100% renewable-energy-powered by 2031.

“I thank my colleagues in the Senate for passing this crucial bill that keeps our state on track to reach our climate goals outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act,” said Senator Parker. “As the Energy and Telecommunications Committee Chairman, I always aim to bring legislation to the floor that protects our environment, fights climate change and global warming, and creates meaningful green-collar jobs for working families. This legislation does just that and is part of the more extensive set of investments and innovative endeavors to help us reach our goal of net zero emissions statewide by 2050.”

The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) set goals for the state to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 1990 levels by 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050. By requiring cellular service providers and third-party tower owners to provide plans for converting energy usage in cell towers to renewable energy resources, the cellular service industry will aid in New York’s effort to fight climate change and transition to a clean energy economy.
