Where Are They Now? Hayden Connors, 2018-19 Senate Fellow

August 16, 2019

When did you participate in the Undergraduate Session Assistants Program or Senate Fellowship?

I participated in the Senate Fellowship in 2018.

Which Senate office were you placed in during your internship?

During my Fellowship, I worked in Senator Golden’s office.

Briefly describe your responsibilities/day-to-day activities in your internship office placement.

I drafted policy memos, wrote and edited press briefings, and met with advocacy groups.  I worked closely with Senator Golden’s constituents to help them navigate through the New York State government and towards a solution to their problems.

Where are you working now? Briefly describe your responsibilities/day-to-day activities in your current place of employment.

I currently work for the NYS Assembly in the Communication and Information Services department.  I research and analyze legislation and legislative priorities for the Assembly majority.  I provide research support for all member outreach programs including radio, television, member correspondence, and newspapers.  Also, I analyze proposed legislation for applicability to specific geographic regions.

What did you learn from participating in the New York State Senate internship programs that you have been able to carry over to your new position?

I really loved my time in Senator Golden’s office.  I learned a lot about the privilege and responsibility that coincides with public service.  I learned when ideological differences are set aside and common ground is found, the interests of the voters are best served.  When our office assisted 9/11 first responders through the intricacies of civil service procedures, all that mattered was that their needs were met.
