TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation
to waiver of fees for veterans and members of the armed forces
PURPOSE: Waives the payment of certain fees by the department of motor
vehicles for veterans and applicants who are serving in the armed force.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Subdivision 3 of section 503 of the vehicle and
traffic law is amended by adding veterans and members currently serving
in the armed force to who the commission may waive the payment of fees
for.
JUSTIFICATION: Veterans and members who are currently serving in the
armed force are dedicated to protecting the United States of America.
As a way to thank them for their service I am introducing legislation
that will add them to the different groups of people who are exempt from
paying certain registration fees at the Department of Motor Vehicles,
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New Legislation.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined.
EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.

AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to waiver of
fees for veterans and members of the armed forces
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 503 of the vehicle and traffic
law, as amended by chapter 548 of the laws of 1986, is amended to read
as follows:
3. Waiver of fee. The commissioner may waive the payment of fees
required by subdivision two of this section if the applicant:
(i) is an inmate in an institution under the jurisdiction of a state
department or agency, or
(ii) is a victim of crime and the driver's license or learner's permit
applied for is a replacement for one that was lost or destroyed as a
result of the crime, OR
(III) IS A VETERAN, OR
(IV) IS CURRENTLY SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES.
S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
