CASTRO -- read once and referred to the Committee on Health AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to increasing bilin- gual nurses' and physician's assistants' wages by two dollars per hour THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The public health law is amended by adding a new section 2807-Z to read as follows: S 2807-Z. MULTI-LINGUAL NURSES AND PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANTS. 1. ANY LICENSED NURSE OR PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT WORKING IN A HOSPITAL WHO FLUENTLY SPEAKS ANY LANGUAGE IN ADDITION TO ENGLISH SHALL BE ENTITLED TO AN INCREASE IN COMPENSATION BY TWO DOLLARS PER HOUR. 2. FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION: A. "PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT" SHALL MEAN ANY PERSON WHO IS REGISTERED AS A PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT PURSUANT TO ARTICLE ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-ONE-B OF THE EDUCATION LAW; B. "LICENSED NURSE" SHALL MEAN EITHER A LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE OR REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL NURSE PURSUANT TO ARTICLE ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-NINE OF THE EDUCATION LAW; AND C. "HOSPITAL" SHALL HAVE THE MEANING ASCRIBED TO IT BY SUBDIVISION ONE OF SECTION TWENTY-EIGHT HUNDRED ONE OF THIS ARTICLE. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
