AN  ACT to amend the general municipal law, in relation to service award
  programs for volunteer firefighters

  THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section  1.  Subdivision  (f)  of section 217 of the general municipal
law, as added by chapter 775 of the laws of 1988, is amended to read  as
follows:
  (f)  In  computing  credit for those active volunteer firefighters who
also serve as paid employees  within  a  political  subdivision  of  the
state,  credit  shall [not] be given for activities performed during the
individual's regularly assigned work  periods,  PROVIDED  HOWEVER,  THAT
SUCH  INDIVIDUAL'S  PARTICIPATION SHALL BE PRECEDED BY APPROVAL FROM THE
APPROPRIATE MUNICIPALITY.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
