TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 176 of the laws of 2007, amend-
ing the education law relating to persons exempt from licensure as
veterinarians in relation to the effectiveness thereof
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This bill would extend the amendment to
the education law that allows physicians to perform operations on simi-
ans under the supervision of licensed veterinarians in the state of New
York. These physicians perform services upon gibbons, siamangs, orangu-
tans, chimps, gorillas and other great apes under certain limited
circumstances.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFICS PROVISIONS: Extension of Section 1 Subdivision 12
of section 6705 of the education law in relation to licensure.
JUSTIFICATION: This legislation enables New York State licensed and
board certified physicians to provide medical care to a specific list of
non-human primates. This practice saves money and provides the best
possible care to the species on the list when it otherwise may not be
available.

AN ACT to amend chapter 176 of the laws of 2007, amending the education
law relating to persons exempt from licensure as veterinarians in
relation to the effectiveness thereof
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 2 of chapter 176 of the laws of 2007, amending the
education law relating to persons exempt from licensure as veterinari-
ans, is amended to read as follows:
S 2. This act shall take effect immediately [and shall expire and be
deemed repealed January 1, 2011].
