BILL NUMBER:A10378 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to desig- nating a portion of the state highway system in the town of Ellicott as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge" PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This would recognize the historic significance of Robert H. Jackson to the Jamestown area by naming the bridge on the Interstate 86 which crosses over Strunk Road in the Town of Ellicott as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge." SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1: Adds a new Section 342-mm to the highway law designating a portion of interstate route eighty-six as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge." Section 2: Provides that the Commissioner of the Department of Transpor- tation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage reflecting the ceremonial designation of this bridge as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge." JUSTIFICATION: In recognition of former United States Supreme Court Justice Robert Houghwout Jackson, the naming of this bridge near James- town, where he grew up and spent much of his life, will honor his memo- ry, while distinguishing the Jamestown area as having held a significant role in his life. PARMENT -- read once and referred to the Commit- tee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the town of Ellicott as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 342-mm to read as follows: S 342-MM. PORTION OF STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "ROBERT H. JACKSON MEMORIAL BRIDGE". THE BRIDGE ON INTERSTATE ROUTE EIGHTY-SIX WHICH CROSSES STRUNK ROAD IN THE TOWN OF ELLICOTT, COUNTY OF CHAUTAUQUA, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "ROBERT H. JACKSON MEMORIAL BRIDGE". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
