AN  ACT  creating the commission on United States senator nominations to
  determine the qualifications of candidates for such office and  submit
  a report of seven persons for the governor to make an appointment from
  such list

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. There shall be a commission on United States senator  nomi-
nations,  hereinafter  referred  to  as  the commission, to evaluate and
determine qualifications of candidates for  appointment  to  the  United
States  senate  in the case of a vacancy and to prepare a written report
and recommend to the governor those  persons  who  by  their  character,
temperament,  professional aptitude and experience are well qualified to
hold the office of United States senator from this state.
  S 2. The commission shall consist of five members of whom one shall be
appointed by each the governor, the temporary president of  the  senate,
the  speaker of the assembly, the minority leader of the senate, and the
minority leader of the assembly.
  S 3. The commission shall consider the  qualifications  of  candidates
for  appointment  to the office of United States senator from this state
and shall prepare a written report and recommend seven  persons  to  the
governor.
  S  4. The governor shall appoint, pursuant to section 42 of the public
officers law, from among those recommended by the commission,  a  person
to fill the office of United States senator from this state.
  S 5. This act shall take effect immediately.
