2009-A2995 (ACTIVE) - Summary

Requires the board of higher education of the city of NY to formulate and promulgate a program whereby residents of NYC who are 60 years of age or older may audit or enroll in courses for examination, grading and credit at the City University of NY in credit or non-credit courses without payment of tuition and other fees; provides that availability of space may be taken into consideration in formulating such program.

AN  ACT  to  amend  the education law, in relation to creation of a free
  tuition continuing education program at the  city  university  of  New
  York for persons sixty years of age and older

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Section 6206 of the education law is amended  by  adding  a
new subdivision 17 to read as follows:
  17.  THE  BOARD  SHALL  FORMULATE  AND  PROMULGATE A PROGRAM TO BECOME
EFFECTIVE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR NEXT SUCCEEDING THE EFFEC-
TIVE DATE OF THIS SUBDIVISION, WHEREBY RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK
WHO ARE SIXTY YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER MAY AUDIT OR ENROLL IN CLASSES  FOR
EXAMINATION,  GRADING  AND  CREDIT AT THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK IN
CREDIT OR NON-CREDIT COURSES, WITHOUT PAYMENT OF TUITION OR  OTHER  FEES
AND  CHARGES.  IN  FORMULATING  SUCH  PROGRAM, THE BOARD SHALL TAKE INTO
ACCOUNT (A) DETERMINATION OF ELIGIBILITY, (B) AVAILABILITY OF SPACE, (C)
AVAILABILITY OF INSTRUCTION, (D) CURRICULUM, (E) SCHEDULE AND  (F)  SUCH
OTHER ITEMS WHICH ARE RELEVANT.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
