AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to requiring a  clin-
  ical laboratory to calculate the glomerular filtration rate when test-
  ing creatinine levels for the diagnosis of kidney disease

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. The public health law is amended by adding  a  new  section
576-d to read as follows:
  S  576-D.  CALCULATION OF GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE. WHERE A CLINICAL
LABORATORY LICENSED IN THIS  STATE  TESTS  A  SPECIMEN  TO  DETERMINE  A
PATIENT'S  SERUM  CREATININE LEVEL, AS ORDERED OR PRESCRIBED BY A HEALTH
CARE PROFESSIONAL AUTHORIZED TO MAKE SUCH AN ORDER OR PRESCRIPTION, SUCH
LABORATORY SHALL CALCULATE  THE  PATIENT'S  GLOMERULAR  FILTRATION  RATE
USING SUCH INFORMATION AS IS PROVIDED BY THE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL OR
PATIENT, AS APPLICABLE. THE LABORATORY SHALL INCLUDE THE PATIENT'S GLOM-
ERULAR FILTRATION RATE WITH ITS REPORT TO THE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.
  S  2.  This  act  shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall
have become a law.
