AN ACT prohibiting any employer from issuing checks to employees which
contain a person's nine digit social security number, and directing
employers to use certain identification numbers
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Notwithstanding any other law, rule, or regulation to the
contrary, no employer, including both public and private, located in the
state of New York, or who pays employees who work in the state of New
York, shall issue a check, draft or voucher to an employee which
contains the employee's nine digit social security number.
S 2. Notwithstanding any other law, rule or regulation to the contra-
ry, any employer, including both public and private, located in the
state of New York, or who pays employees who work in the state of New
York, shall use either the last four digits of the person's social secu-
rity number or separately created numbers on any check issued to the
employee.
S 3. A penalty of $500 will be charged to each employer per violation
of section one of this act.
S 4. This act shall take effect one year after the date it shall have
become a law.
