AN ACT to amend the education  law,  in  relation  to  establishing  the
  office  of  university coordinator for veterans' services and to amend
  the executive law, in relation to requiring the division of  veterans'
  affairs  to  assist  the  state  university  of  New York and the city
  university of New York in coordinating  services  to  assist  veterans
  returning to the classroom

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Subdivision 2 of  section  355  of  the  education  law  is
amended by adding a new paragraph y to read as follows:
  Y.  TO  ESTABLISH  THE  OFFICE OF UNIVERSITY COORDINATOR FOR VETERANS'
SERVICES, WHICH OFFICE SHALL BE LOCATED AT  THE  CENTRAL  ADMINISTRATION
DIVISION.  THE  COORDINATOR  SHALL  BE APPOINTED BY THE STATE UNIVERSITY
TRUSTEES AND SERVE AT ITS PLEASURE. THE COORDINATOR SHALL BE  AN  HONOR-
ABLY DISCHARGED VETERAN AS DEFINED IN SECTION THREE HUNDRED FIFTY OF THE
EXECUTIVE LAW. THE COORDINATOR'S DUTIES SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMIT-
ED  TO,  IDENTIFICATION, DEVELOPMENT, PLANNING A DETAILED PLAN TO ASSIST
VETERANS IN MAKING THE TRANSITION INTO THE  CLASSROOM  AFTER  COMPLETING
THEIR  MILITARY SERVICE. THE COORDINATOR SHALL CONSULT WITH THE DIVISION
OF VETERANS' AFFAIRS. THE COORDINATOR FOR VETERANS' SERVICES MAY APPOINT
A VETERANS' AFFAIRS DIRECTOR AT EACH STATE OPERATED INSTITUTION  IN  THE
STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM.
  S  2.  Section  353  of  the  executive law is amended by adding a new
subdivision 2-a to read as follows:
  2-A. TO ASSIST THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AND THE CITY UNIVERSI-
TY OF NEW YORK IN COORDINATING A  COMPREHENSIVE  ARRAY  OF  SERVICES  TO
ASSIST  VETERANS  IN  MAKING  THE  TRANSITION  INTO  THE  CLASSROOM. THE
SERVICES MAY INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO, ASSISTANCE IN APPLYING  FOR
STATE AND FEDERAL STUDENT FINANCIAL AID AND COUNSELING RESOURCES.
