BILL NUMBER:A8857 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to prohibiting authorized emergency vehicles from using emergency lights or sirens when not in an emergency situation PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF THE BILL: This bill addresses the growing concerns regarding the improper use of emergency vehicles. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This bill amends Section 1104 of the vehicle and traffic law by adding a new subdivision (g) to read as follows: The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle shall be prohibited from using any audible signals, such as sirens, or emergency lights when the authorized emergency vehicle is not being used in an emergency situ- ation. JUSTIFICATION: Emergency vehicle conductors who used audible signals and/or emergency lights when not necessary have become more prevalent. This is an action see everyday within our State. This is the abuse of these conductors power given to them to only be used in case of an emer- gency being used to not complete that action. This power is rather being used by some conductors not all to get through red lights, pass through traffic or speed through residential neighborhoods. This bill would make it no longer possible for this emergency vehicle conductors who are suppose to be here for assistance to no longer use
