BILL NUMBER: S4241 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating the bridge crossing the Erie Canal on state route 291 as the Army Captain George A. Wood Memorial Bridge PURPOSE : Designates a portion of the state highway system in the town of Marcy, Oneida county constituting the bridge across the Erie Canal on State Highway 291 as the Army Captain George A. Wood Memorial Bridge. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Amends the highway law by adding a new section 342-SS to ensure the foregoing. JUSTIFICATION : Army Captain George A. Wood lost his life on November 20, 2003 during operation Iraqi Freedom. The designation of the "Army Captain George A. Wood Memorial Bridge" is a fitting expression of gratitude to a man who so bravely served and died for his country. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY : New.

GRIFFO -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating the bridge crossing the Erie Canal on state route 291 as the Army Captain George A. Wood Memorial Bridge THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 342-ss to read as follows: S 342-SS. PORTION OF STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "ARMY CAPTAIN GEORGE A. WOOD MEMORIAL BRIDGE". THE BRIDGE ACROSS THE ERIE CANAL ON STATE HIGHWAY TWO HUNDRED NINETY-ONE IN THE TOWN OF MARCY, COUNTY OF ONEIDA SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "ARMY CAPTAIN GEORGE A. WOOD MEMORIAL BRIDGE" IN HONOR OF THE LATE ARMY CAPTAIN. S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
