AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to providing  that  desig-
  nating  petitions and independent nominating petitions may not contain
  candidates for the same public office from different political  subdi-
  visions

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 6-134  of  the  election  law,  as
added by chapter 709 of the laws of 1996, is amended to read as follows:
  1.  A designating petition may designate candidates for nomination for
one or more DIFFERENT public offices or for nomination for  election  to
one or more party positions or both, but designations or nominations for
which  the  petitions  are  required to be filed in different offices OR
PETITIONS FOR THE SAME PUBLIC OFFICE  OR  PARTY  POSITION  IN  DIFFERENT
POLITICAL  SUBDIVISIONS may not be combined in the same petition. If two
or more offices having the same title are to  be  filled  for  different
terms, the terms of office shall be included as part of the title of the
office.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
