BILL NUMBER: S4450 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to requiring maintenance of fire alarm boxes in cities with a population of one million or more SUMMARY : This bill would propose a mandatory maintenance of fire alarm boxes within cities of populations of one million or more. It asserts that all fire alarm boxes in operation as of September first 1994 shall remain in operation until January 1, 2008. JUSTIFICATION : Recently, within New York city the removal of over 16,000 fire alarm boxes has become an issue. The removal of these boxes would pose a threat to the lives of those citizens who have no other means to notify fire departments in case of an emergency. FISCAL IMPLICATION : To be determined. EFFECTIVE DATE : This act shall take effect immediately.
