BILL NUMBER: S4613 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the education law, in relation to including Aviation High School as a special high school in New York city PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : This bill adds Aviation High School to the list of special New York City high schools. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Adds Aviation High School to the existing list of NYC high schools which require admission by "solely and exclusively taking a competitive, objective and scholastic achievement examination". Aviation will be included in a list that currently includes Bronx High School of Science, Stuyvesant High School and Brooklyn High School. EFFECTS OF PRESENT LAW WHICH THIS BILL WOULD ALTER : It amends section one paragraphs (a) and (b) of subdivision twelve of section twenty-five hundred ninety-g of the Education Law, by adding Aviation High School to the list of special high schools. JUSTIFICATION : Aviation High School is the only public school in NYS to offer the course leading to F.A.A. certification in air frame/power plant

ONORATO, THOMPSON -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to including Aviation High School as a special high school in New York city THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Paragraph (b) of subdivision 1 of section 2590-h of the education law, as amended by chapter 720 of the laws of 1996, is amended to read as follows: (b) all specialized senior high schools. The special high schools shall include the present schools known as: The Bronx High School of Science, Stuyvesant High School, AVIATION HIGH SCHOOL, Brooklyn Technical High School, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and the Arts in the borough of Manhattan, and such further schools which the city board may designate from time to time. The special schools shall be permitted to maintain a discovery program in accordance with the law in effect on the date preceding the effective date of this section; admissions to the special schools shall be conducted in accordance with the law in effect on the date preceding the effective date of this section; S 2.
