BILL NUMBER: S7476 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the state law, in relation to naming the Newtown Pippin apple as the official state historic fruit PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : This bill names the Newtown pippin apple as the state historic fruit. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section 1 names the Newtown Pippin apple as the state historic fruit of New York. Section 2 is the effective date. JUSTIFICATION : The Newtown Pippin apple is an heirloom apple born, developed and grown in New York State. It is a chance apple which sprouted from a random seed or "pip" and was first picked in 1730 on the farm of Gresham Moore in Newtown, Queens County. The Newtown Pippin was the pre-eminent apple of early America. George Washington favored them, Ben Franklin had them shipped to him in London and Thomas Jefferson grew them at Monticello and wrote of them to James Madison from Paris, "They have no apple here to compare with our Newtown Pippin." It is indeed the "Founding Apple."
