BILL NUMBER:S8444 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to persons required to be notified of bedbug infestations in certain public schools PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To require New York City school health services to provide notification to the entire school community upon discovery of bed bugs. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Chapter amends S.4472 and A.5434 to provide for notice of a bedbug infestation in a public school to the guardians of affected students in the school. Subdivision 1 of section 920 of the education law, as added by a chapter of the laws of 2010, amending the education law relating to directing a city school district having a population of one million or more to provide notice of bedbug infestations in public schools, as proposed in legislative bills numbers S.4472 and A.5434. The notification would enable parents/guardians to make more informed decisions as to the health and safety of their child and family. Includes "guardian of potentially affected students attending the school" as persons to be notified in addition to parents or persons in parental relation. Also adds that the principal shall advise the

STAVISKY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to persons required to be notified of bedbug infestations in certain public schools THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 920 of the education law, as added by a chapter of the laws of 2010, amending the education law relating to directing a city school district having a population of one million or more to provide notice of bedbug infestations in public schools, as proposed in legislative bills numbers S. 4472 and A. 5434, is amended to read as follows: 1. In a city school district having a population of one million or more inhabitants, the principal of each public school shall provide immediate notification to [all] parents [or], persons in parental relation OR GUARDIANS OF POTENTIALLY AFFECTED STUDENTS ATTENDING THE SCHOOL, disclosing a finding relating to the infestation of bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) in such school. THE PRINCIPAL SHALL ADVISE THE PARENTS' ASSOCIATION OR PARENT-TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION OF THE SCOPE OF SUCH NOTIFICATION. S 2. This act shall take effect on the same date and in the same manner as a chapter of the laws of 2010, amending the education law relating to directing a city school district having a population of one million or more to provide notice of bedbug infestations in public schools, as proposed in legislative bills numbers S. 4472 and A. 5434, takes effect.
