BILL NUMBER:S5474 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to fees for searches and copies of documents of the department of motor vehicles PURPOSE: Amends Section 202 of the vehicle and traffic law to exempt legal aid societies and bureaus and other entities that provide representation pursuant to County Law § 722(2) from the fees charged by the Department of Motor Vehicles for record searches and copies of documents. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends subdivision 1 of vehicle and traffic law section 202 to add legal aid bureaus and societies and other organizations that provide public defense representation to the list of entities that are exempt from fees for department of motor vehicles record searches and copies of documents. LAVINE -- read once and referred to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to fees for searches and copies of documents of the department of motor vehicles THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 202 of the vehicle and traffic law, as amended by chapter 708 of the laws of 2006, is amended to read as follows: 1. Except in those cases in which it is provided by law that no fee shall be charged, the fees for searching the records of the department of motor vehicles kept pursuant to the provisions of this chapter and for furnishing copies of documents in said department kept pursuant to the provisions of this chapter shall be as provided in this section. Provided, however, that no fee shall be charged any public officer, board or body, volunteer fire company [or], volunteer ambulance service, OR LEGAL AID BUREAU OR SOCIETY OR OTHER PRIVATE ENTITY WHEN ACTING PURSUANT TO SECTION SEVEN HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO OF THE COUNTY LAW, for searches or copies of documents to be used for a public purpose.
