BILL NUMBER:S6768

TITLE OF BILL:
An act
to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion
of the state highway system to be known as
the "Peconic highway"

PURPOSE:
Designates a portion of the state highway system to be known
as the "Peconic Highway."

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
The highway law is amended by adding a new
section 342-aaa to designate the portion of the state highway system
known as state Route 24 which is located in the towns of Southampton
and Brookhaven, county of Suffolk, which begins at the westerly
junction of interstate 495 and ends at the easterly junction of State
Route 27 as the "Peconic Highway".

New York State Route 24, an 11 mile long highway which
begins at Exit 71 off the Long Island Expressway, runs through the
Towns of Brookhaven and Southampton, and ends at Montauk Highway in
Hampton Bays.
Route 24 follows the Peconic River, a New York State protected and
ecologically significant wild, Scenic and Recreational River. Route
24 also hugs the shoreline of the federally recognized Peconic
Estuary; an estuary which is the central driving economic force for
the Peconic region. NY Route 24 links downtown Riverhead-with the
South Fork and provides an easy route to connect the North and South
Forks of the Peconic Region. Route 24 also houses many culturally and
historically significant landmarks indigenous to the Peconic Region.
This legislation would designate State Route 24 beginning at is
westerly junction with Interstate 495 (Long Island Expressway) and
ending at its easterly junction with State Route 27 (Sunrise
Highway)as the "Peconic Highway".
