BILL NUMBER:S1125 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the election law, in relation to voter registration cards PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This bill provides that a person may not be compensated based upon the number of signed voter registration cards he or she collects. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This bill would prohibit payment based on the number of signed voter registration cards collected. JUSTIFICATION: The bill would have prohibited politicians, political parties, and interest groups from paying or receiving money based on the number of signed voter registration cards. This legislation would eliminate potential fraud and abuse by paid registration-gatherers in New York. PARKER -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Elections AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to voter registration cards THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The election law is amended by adding a new section 5-229 to read as follows: S 5-229. PAYMENT FOR VOTER REGISTRATION CARDS. A PERSON MAY NOT RECEIVE MONEY OR ANY OTHER THING OF VALUE BASED ON THE NUMBER OF SIGNED VOTER REGISTRATION CARDS SUCH PERSON COLLECTS. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to voter registration cards collected on or after such effective date.
